Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

CRS in Express Entry

In the Express Entry arrangement, all eligible skilled immigration applicants are placed into a candidate pool, and their ranking is determined by the Comprehensive Ranking arrangement (CRS). The CRS is instrumental in selecting candidates from the pool to invite them to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

The CRS is a point-based arrangement that assesses and assigns scores to candidates based on the information provided in their profiles. These scores are used to rank candidates within the pool.

Candidates are awarded points based on several key factors, including:

Age: Candidates receive points based on their age, with younger applicants generally receiving higher scores.

Education: The level of education completed by the candidate is taken into account, with higher education levels yielding more points.

Language Proficiency: Points are allocated based on the candidate's proficiency in one of Canada's official languages, either English or French. This includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities.

Canadian Work Experience: Candidates are awarded points for their work experience in Canada.

Language Proficiency, Education, and Canadian Work Experience of Spouse or Common-Law Partner: If applicable, the language skills, education, and Canadian work experience of the candidate's spouse or common-law partner are considered.

Arranged Employment: Candidates with a validated job offer receive points, and those in managerial positions (National Occupation Classification TEER 0 Major Group 00) receive additional points.

Provincial Nomination: Candidates who have received a provincial government nomination for permanent residence are awarded a significant number of points.

Sibling in Canada: Having a sibling living in Canada can result in additional points.

Skill Transferability: Certain combinations of language skills, education, and work experience are evaluated to determine the likelihood of successful employment in Canada.

Using these factors, candidates accumulate a score out of a maximum of 1,200 points. The highest-scoring candidates in the pool receive invitations to apply for permanent residence (ITA) during periodic draws.

The CRS arrangement prioritizes applicants who are likely to integrate successfully into Canadian society and have a positive economic impact. Consequently, having an approved job offer or a provincial nomination significantly boosts a candidate's score.

An approved job offer in a managerial field (National Occupation Classification TEER 0 Major Group 00) is worth 200 points, while other job offers (NOC TEER 1, 2, or 3, or any TEER 0 other than Major Group 00) earn 50 points. A provincial nomination automatically adds 600 points to a candidate's score, almost guaranteeing an ITA for permanent residence.

Age

A pool of candidates will be created from each of the qualified skilled immigration applicants who are eligible for the Express Entry arrangement. The Comprehensive Ranking arrangement (CRS) is then used to rank the candidates in the Express Entry pool. Which applicants from the pool will receive invitations to submit applications for permanent residency is decided using the CRS.

The CRS assigns a candidate a score based on the data in their profile and is a points-based arrangement. These ratings enable candidates in the pool to be compared to one another.

Points are awarded to applicants based on the following criteria:

Education

linguistic ability

Canadian work history

The applicant's spouse or common-law partner's language abilities, educational background, and employment history in Canada
